TheĀ AvalancheĀ is a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. The team was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques and was one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA).
The Nordiques were absorbed into the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1995 and became the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the NHL.
The Avalanche won two Stanley Cups, in 1996 and 2001. The franchise has been a contender for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for much of its history but missed the playoffs in 11 out of its first 12 seasons in Denver.
In the 2013-14 season, the Avalanche made the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and went on to lose to the Minnesota Wild in the first round.
In the 2014-15 season, the Avalanche made the playoffs again, this time as the Central Divisionās second seed. They defeated the Wild in the first round but lost to theĀ Chicago BlackhawksĀ in the second round.
The Avalanche currently play their home games at Pepsi Center, which they share with the Denver Nuggets of the NBA.
The teamās official colors are blue, burgundy, and white.
