The Ottawa Senators are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators play their home games at the 18,572-seat Canadian Tire Centre, which opened in 1996.
The Senators were founded in 1883 as the Ottawa Hockey Club. The club later became the “Senators” in 1925. They have won eleven Stanley Cups, the second-most of any team in NHL history. They are the only team to have competed in every Stanley Cup Final since 1927 without having won the Stanley Cup, which they last did in 2007. They lost in the Eastern Conference Finals that year to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.
In 2017, the Senators made it to the Eastern Conference Finals again, where they faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Senators would go on to lose the series in seven games.
The Senators are currently owned by Eugene Melnyk, who purchased the team in 2003. The team is valued at $445 million.
The Senators have a long-standing rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which is considered one of the most intense in all of the professional sports.
The Senators are currently coached by Guy Boucher, who was hired in 2016. The team’s general manager is Pierre Dorion, who was appointed to the position in April 2015.
The Senators play their home games at the Canadian Tire Centre, which is located in the west end of Ottawa. The arena has a capacity of 18,572.
The Senators are currently in the midst of a rebuild and are not expected to be competitive for a Stanley Cup for several years. However, they have some promising young players, such as Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot, who could help the team become competitive in the future.
